Protests in Hong Kong

Hong Kong has been experiencing exceptional moments of political tension. The frustration of large social sectors before the offer made by Beijing of an electoral reform that distorts the essence of universal suffrage by drastically restricting the selection of potential candidates for the local government leadership for the 2017 elections has unleashed a wave of protests from an unforeseen scope and duration, and with consequences that it is not yet possible to calculate.

The suspension by the local government of the announced talks with the student organizations that have taken the lead in the protests has only served to revitalize and reinforce them. At the moment of concluding this analysis it is not possible to predict what will be its outcome or to what extent the demonstrators will be able to achieve any of its objectives.
